Ottawa man dies in industrial accident

OTTAWA -- An Ottawa resident died in an industrial accident at the Hirzel Canning Co. here Tuesday morning.

Nicacio Garcia, 49, was pronounced dead at St. Rita's Ambulatory Care Center, Glandorf, following the 11:38 a.m. accident.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, Garcia was working on a new machine with a co-worker when the machine malfunctioned, trapping Garcia. Co-workers disassembled the machine to free Garcia prior to the arrival of the emergency personnel.

Hirzel Canning Co., 325 Williamstown Road, cans tomatoes under the name Dei Fratelli. The new machine was used to wrap plastic around the product, which was palletized for shipping.

The sheriff's office reported the machine just "malfunctioned." No foul play is suspected.

Assisting at the scene were the Ottawa Police Department, Ottawa heavy rescue, Ottawa EMS and the Ottawa Emergency Management Agency.

Deputies are still investigating the exact cause of the accident.
